FDNY welcomes veterans to fire academy

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The Never Forget Foundation, the FDNY, and the Wounded Warrior Project teamed up to make a special day possible. Wounded veterans and Yankees GM Brian Cashman came to the FDNY Academy on Randall's Island for an exciting and fun-filled day.

We at Fox 5 were lucky enough to be tag along.

Eugene Lynch, a 29-year veteran of the FDNY and president of the Never Forget Foundation said the FDNY and the military have a strong bond.

The training exercises we participated in included going into dark building in full gear and putting out a live fire. We also rappelled down a 5-story building. A few of the guys even learned to cut a lock.

Everyone -- the veterans and the firefighters -- all very much enjoyed talking baseball and taking pictures with Cashman. But he, too, had a great time.

Deep beneath the hustle and bustle of Tribeca lies a modern-day oasis brimming with old world charm: Aire Ancient Baths, my new favorite city escape. The breathtaking spa is illuminated by hundreds of candles and smells of invigorating eucalyptus. For around $80 you can bathe in the tranquil blue pools for 90 minutes and find the temperature that's right for you.

From coffee shops in Brooklyn to restaurants in Manhattan, we find speakeasies standing out by blending in. When people in Bushwick want a green machine juice blend they visit Leticia Castillo's Owl Juice Pub. But first they must find the owl. "We been doing fine without a sign," Castillo says.
