George Hamilton: It's A Real Marathon To Get Healthy

Posted: Updated:

Back in the day, there was a time when George Hamilton was going to be the next Cary Grant.  But as Steve Edwards points out on Good Day L.A., "It was at that moment that America decided it didn't want another Cary Grant.  "They wanted Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino," who were not the classically-handsome leading-man types that Cary Grant and George Hamilton were.

"I've always liked that old-fashioned kind of style," George adds as he reminisces about Cary Grant and David Niven.  "But that's the way Hollywood is."

And it's not like he hasn't been successful at the career path he carved for himself.  "I've done like 90 movies and hundreds of TV shows."  A couple of classics come to mind, "Where The Boys Are" and "Love At First Bite."  If you haven't seen them, you should.

Fun facts about George Hamilton:

  • Hamilton began his film career in 1952. Although he has a substantial body of work in film and television, he is perhaps most famous for his debonair style and his perfect and perpetual suntan (Bo Derek writes in her autobiography, "there was an ongoing contest between John [Derek] and George Hamilton as to who was tanner").
  • One of his best-known MGM films was the iconic Where the Boys Are (1960), a coming-of-age romantic comedy set during a college student spring break in the Fort Lauderdale area of Florida in which Hamilton played a smooth Ivy League type. Hamilton received a Golden Globe award in 1960 as Most Promising Newcomer (Male).
  • A break for Hamilton came in 1990 when Francis Coppola cast him as the Corleone family's lawyer in a much-anticipated film, The Godfather, Part III.
  • Hamilton was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame on 12 August 2009 – his 70th birthday. In 1999, a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs, California, Walk of Stars was dedicated to him.
