Lawmakers hear Tobin plan to pay fire survivors

PHOENIX (AP) - House Speaker Andy Tobin is urging a legislative committee to quickly come up with a plan to pay full survivor and other benefits to the 13 part-time firefighters who were among 19 killed in the Yarnell Hill wildfire.
Tobin testified before a House committee Tuesday that the state also should help Yarnell rebuild and pay costs Prescott is facing can be crafted quickly.

If the Public Safety, Military and Regulatory Affairs Committee can craft such a plan he hopes Gov. Jan Brewer can call a special legislative session.
The survivors of part-time members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots receive much less than the crew's 6 full-time firefighters and aren't eligible for health benefits. That's led to an uproar among some of the survivors that Tobin wants the Legislature to address.
