PHOENIX -

Sometimes karma gets it right.

United Blood Services picked 10 finalists out of 50,000 donors and on Thursday, they gave one of them a new 2013 Volkswagen Passat live on FOX 10 Arizona Morning.

Each finalist picked a key.  Only one of those keys started the winning car.

It couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy.

"I can't believe it.  I never won anything," said Robert Hessler.

Hessler has donated blood more than 100 times over the past 50 years.

"I started out in high school and I think it was just a bunch of guys getting together and then I went into the Navy and Vietnam.. was going on and they had blood drives all the time because they needed a lot of blood in 'Nam," he said.

When the war ended, Hessler continued to give blood.

"And one time I got a five gallon pin.  It's nice, but you don't pin it on your hat and walk around and say hey, look at this 'cause it's not why you're doing it," he said.

A modest man -- who jokes at first he didn't think he was the winner.

"I was doing it wrong.  I know you find that hard to believe."

"I'm listening and I don't hear anything and I'm saying there's nine people that didn't start their car, so I did it again and it started.. it's been a good day since then."

A good day for a man who likely helped untold lives by donating blood.

"Any way it feels good to do it, so I do it," he said.

Hessler and his wife are going to keep on giving.  They plan to drive the new car from their Show Low home to their daughter's 50th birthday party in North Carolina.
