Teen shot and killed in west Phoenix; police search for answers

Posted: Updated:

An 18-year-old was shot and killed while riding in a car with friends near 77th Avenue and Osborn. Now police are asking the public for their help to find the people who opened fire.

At this point, Phoenix Police tells us they have no clues, no leads to go on and no witnesses.  There were two other people in the car with the victim, he was a passenger.  They told police they were heading east on Osborn and the gunfire came out of nowhere.

"To me, it sounded like a chi ka, chi ka.  You could hear the shells being ejected," said Peter Sheehan, an area resident.

Sheehan heard the gunshots ring out around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday -- just blocks away from the home he shares with his brother Michael.

"They had it all barricaded off here and there was a helicopter that was over head," said Michael Sheehan.

Detectives say the 18-year-old male and his friends, a 19 and 20-year-old, were shot at while driving down the street.

"They sounded like somebody had a flat tire.  To be honest with you, we didn't even think it was gunshots.  We didn't check outside or anything," said Enrique Medina, an area resident.

"All of the sudden from somewhere, someone started firing at them, so at this point, it's pretty much random," said Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes.

Holmes says the 18-year-old's friends drove him to a nearby hospital where he was eventually pronounced dead.  The two cooperating with investigators -- unable to provide any information as to what happened or why.

And that's what worries the Sheehan brothers and others in the neighborhood.

"What I'm going to do is I'm going to go to the community meeting as soon as they have it again.  I've been asked.. me and my brother have been asked to join and become officers in the local community here," said Peter.

Police have not released the name of the victim.  His friends were not hit by gunfire, but obviously are very shaken up.
