City-wide process to replace Detroit street lights underway

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

The Public Lighting Authority (PLA) of Detroit began a block-by-block audit of the city's street lights. Today is the beginning of a 3-year plan to improve the cities' deteriorating network of lights.

Some estimates have less than half of the cities' 88,000 street lights working properly.

The PLA says information from the mapping will allow them to improve the design and installation of the new lights. The most common problem seems to be busted bulbs and stolen copper wire.

Construction of new lights begins this fall. Click the video above to see reactions from people looking forward to well-lit streets again.
