Relative Of 'Devil's Pool' Drowning Victims Demands City Action

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A close relative of the father and son who drowned in the Wissahickon Creek says he has a new mission. Matthew Luciano is on a crusade to save lives.

"No more drownings! No more people getting hurt," he said.

He knows all too well the heartache sudden death brings. Nearly two weeks ago his father Pete died. Pete jumped into the Wissahickon Creek trying to save his 13-year-old son Jordan.

The cross currents of the area they were in, known as Devil's Pool, were too strong. The father and son never came back up.

Now Matthew's petitioning Philadelphia City Council members to tighten security around dangerous creeks so other families never have to feel his pain.

"We need to have better structure," exclaimed Luciano. "More security, surveillance cameras, park rangers whatever they have to do to keep people from drowning."

"I think the city is looking at a safety issue here and needs to do a study," says Councilman Mark Squilla. The First District Councilman has been in touch with Luciano about his petition, but says no plans are in motion.

Squilla agrees better signs in problem areas might be something the city could consider. He says he wants to save lives, but funding park rangers and cameras to do it isn't economically feasible.

"You look at every open area where people can access water, where and how would you have the man power to do that and where would funding come from," he says.

Luciano says he's set up an account and hopes to raise money to help put up signs and other security measure around the place where his family members drowned.

"No more of the drownings, no more people getting hurt, no more nothing. But the main focus that I'm here for today is to spread the word out that we need to have a better structure, more security, surveillance cameras, parkway rangers, whatever that they gotta do to keep from people drowning," he said exclusively to FOX 29.
