CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A group of 11 volunteers from the Chicago area is headed to Colorado to assist people affected by widespread flooding there.

Officials estimate as many as 18,000 homes were affected by the flash floods last week in Colorado, the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago said in a release.

Eleven Red Cross volunteers from the Chicago area headed to the state this week to distribute supplies and assess damage, the release said.

Some communities remain difficult to access because of floodwater and damaged roads, and recovering from the disaster will take months, the agency said.

Among the local volunteers is Chicagoan Susy Turnbull, who will oversee field operations and staffing of shelters. This will be her tenth deployment with the Red Cross, the agency said.

Anyone wishing to assist in disaster relief efforts can visit text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation, or contact the agency by phone or online.
