ArtPrize reports the Detroit fire-breathing dragon, known as Gon KiRin, has been voted into the festival's Top 25 list.

Fox 2's Robin Schwartz introduced us to the dragon earlier this month. You can see her report here.

The sculpture is make entirely of found, recycled objects. The dragon is 26 feet tall and weighs 17,000 pounds. Other objects used to make the 3D sculpture include a 1963 Dodge truck, a boat, and several couches. There's also a propane cannon, where the fire comes from and more than 700 LED lights that light the dragon up at night.

The dragon sits in the parking plaza of the B.O.B. in Grand Rapids along with several other Top 25'ers from Michigan. Those other top submissions include "Back to Eden," a giant, vertical plant wall that snakes around the plaza, submitted from Spring Lake, MI; and "Tired Pandas," a sculptural, witty play-on-words of a mama and baby panda made out of recycled tires.

Other Top 25 submissions from Michigan, located in other ArtPrize venues, are from Ann Arbor, Belmont, Flint, Frankfort, Lake Odessa, and Battle Creek. The contest is nation-wide, with Top 25 submissions also coming from Washington, Florida, New York, West Virginia, California, Connecticut, North Carolina, and Utah. The Top 10 entries will be announced Sunday, Sept. 29.

The first-place winner of the festival is awarded a whopping $200,000. ArtPrize is located in dozens of venues in downtown Grand Rapids from Sept. 18 - Oct. 6, 2013. ArtPrize is the world's largest art competition.
