15 Oxford football players diagnosed with Impetigo

Posted: Updated:
OXFORD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Officials say over a dozen football players at Oxford High School have been diagnosed with Impetigo.

In a letter to parents, Oxford Community Schools Superintendent Dr. William Skilling says 15 cases of Impetigo were diagnosed Tuesday among the junior varsity football team.

Skilling says all locker rooms and training rooms have undergone additional sanitation. All student athletes were also asked to take their personal equipment home for cleaning.

Impetigo is a contagious skin infection that can be transmitted from skin-to-skin contact or from sharing equipment.

For students who were diagnosed, a doctor's note is required before they are allowed to participate in practices.

Impetigo initially presents itself as small red bumps similar to insect bites. They can turn into blisters or sores and eventually scab over. It is treated with antibiotics.
