Retired police K-9 rescued from animal shelter gets new home

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -

A retired police dog rescued from an animal shelter has found a new home.

Last month, FOX 5 first reported on the story of former Greensboro, Ga. Police Department K-9 Dino.  After the K-9 retired, his handler turned him over to a neighbor, who later left the German Shepherd at an animal shelter.

Carla Brown and the Canine Pet Rescue group stepped in and got Dino out of the shelter.

After the story aired, many people volunteered to adopt Dino.

"Thanks to FOX 5, we received a lot of interest on him -- a lot of applications from across the country:  California, Massachusetts, but we wanted to keep Dino close to home," said Brown.

After a lengthy review, Sue and Dan Black of Flowery Branch got the nod.

"We talked about it and discussed it in length and thought it was just the right thing to do for Dino...to give him a good home," said Dan Black.

Sue Black works for a veterinary group.

"When we saw the news, it was just meant to be. I can provide veterinary service to him for whatever he needs," Sue Black said.

Dino, 8, still loves to run and play. Before his adoption, he got a full check-up. While he suffers from hearing loss, he is otherwise in good shape for retirement.

Brown hopes that Dino's story will inspire others to adopt. Canine Pet Rescue is a nonprofit group that was started in 2009. It specializes in rescuing German Shepherds and other breeds.

"We've got a kennel full of other dogs, and this is just half of what we have," Brown said. "We have foster homes throughout the state with German Shepherds in their care just waiting on their forever home."
