House Votes To Avoid Shutdown, Delay Obamacare 1 Year

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

House Republicans worked all day Saturday to try to take Obamacare off the table and avoid a government shutdown this Tuesday.

But Democrats are telling them "not so fast."

Republicans worked over the weekend to hash out a revamped continuing resolution bill, or C.R., after the Senate sent it back.

The Senate version kept funding for healthcare, the one issue Republicans are standing against.

This new house C.R. hopes to delay Obamacare for at least a year in order to prevent a government shutdown.

"I believe the House can readily accept these changes, pass the bill, and provide good governance and keep the lights on in our government," said Rep. Hal Rogers, (R-Ky.)

The House Rules Committee combed through the amendments to the bill before bringing it to the House floor for a vote around midnight that was successful.

The primary measures include: delaying Obamacare for a year; repealing the tax on medical devices which fund Obamacare; and a separate bill regarding military salary, should a shutdown occur.

"I don't think we should skip a payday for our troops," said Rep. Buck Mckeon, (R-Calif.). "You know, we're still at war. We have people over there in Afghanistan fighting every day. They have families here at home, they have big concerns about them, and they should."

However, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has the upper hand, for now.

Once the House bill is sent to the Senate, Reid may block any changes by tabling the amendments and sending the Senate bill back to the House, leaving Speaker John Boehner an even shorter amount of time to format a new bill.

Senate and House Democrats are urging Republicans to keep Obamacare off the table to avoid a shutdown before the end of the fiscal year.

"If Republicans really don't want a shutdown, they wouldn't be putting up a bill to avert one of the most politically damaging results," Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) said.

The White House issued a statement Saturday that says Obama will veto the House bill to defund his healthcare namesake should the bill end up on his table, Fox's Bryan Llenas reported.
