Police Trading Cards A Big Hit Amongst Kids

Posted: Updated:

We've all heard of baseball cards. Kids collect them and trade them with their friends, and adults buy and sell valuable cards for serious cash.

Delaware Police have come up with its own set of trading cards featuring their very own police officers!

Fox 29's Kelly Hessedal talked to a young collector who can't get enough of those cards.

It's the Newark Police Department in a way you've probably never seen it before. An officer on a trading card, we spoke to Lt. Mark Farall outside the department's headquarters.

"So what is the point of all this? There's two goals, the first is to reinforce what children are taught at an early age is that police officers are their friends." Farrall said. "In addition to that we want parents to know who is policing the city of Newark."

Everyone has a card complete with a bio on the back, from the administrative staff to the K-9 officers.

Master Corporal Gerald Bryda said the cards have been a big hit! "We've had groups of up to 20 kids that come after school wait for our shift changes," Byrda said.

Fifth grader Ethan Easterby was the first to collect all 86 cards and he'll get a prize for it.

"I was shocked I didn't know I would win," Easterby said.

His father Eric said his son traded them just like baseball cards. He said his favorite cards feature the K-9 dogs.

There are 86 cards total featuring the entire Newark Police staff. The department came up with this idea to get kids interacting with the officers in a positive way.

Newark Police have joked about signing them to make them more valuable. The cost of putting the cards together came up to about $6000. The department points out, this was not created with taxpayer money. Funding for this came from donations from businesses and business leaders in the community.
