What Does the ACA (Obamacare) Mean to You?

Posted: Updated:

Starting October 1, millions of uninsured Californians will be able to sign up for health insurance through  www.CoveredCA.com   There is also a toll free number for those who don't have access to a computer and the internet.  800-300-1506   For those who've never had health insurance, trying to figure out what plan works for you and your family might be confusing.  You have to choose the insurance provider; Anthem Blue Shield is one of them.

Then you have to choose what kind of coverage.  You could choose a high deductible, high co-pay to reduce the monthly premium or graduate to more expensive monthly plan that offers a lower deductible, say $2000 for a family of four with an annual income of $60,000.  Even, if you're circumspect about what the health coverage will be like, it's worth a venture to www.coveredca.com   You can punch in your income, zip code and number of people in your family  and find out what those premiums would be and what if any tax credit assistance you might qualify for.  And, you can all do that without leaving your name or your social security number.

Meantime, if you're still feeling nervous about checking out the state's healthcare exchange; meet Spike Dolomite Ward.  In 2011, she was diagnosed with cancer, but her family had no insurance.  She found out, just in time, that she qualified for a part of ACA that let people like her into the exchange early.  She says without ACA, she would either be bankrupt from the cancer treatments or dead.

Here's a blog she wrote after her diagnosis.

She also found herself an expert of sorts for ACA.  She created the Facebook page, hoping to help those overwhelmed by the politispeak.

Be sure, to click around all the ACA stories and links we have on MyFoxLA.com  There's some helpful information to help you decide if you should opt in or pay the penalty for opting out.  PS the penalty is about $95 per person for 2014, but that amount will go up if you opt out in 2015 and beyond.
