Local Government Employees Face Shutdown

Law enforcement officers are some of the federal workers who will remain on the job during the shutdown, but hundreds of thousands of other employees were told to go home on Tuesday.

Patrick Honan and his wife, both work as park rangers at Independence Mall, Both received furlough notices this morning, and they are both worried about making ends meet to provide for their one month old daughter,

"We have to figure out how to feed our family. We have to put credit cards aside to pay our food bills just so we can get by until congress makes a decision, "Patrick said.

Honan was among the union members protesting demanding congress come to an agreement and pass a spending plan.

Fellow park ranger Helen McKenna worked there during the last government shutdown 17 years ago.

"I didn't get a paycheck for quite a while, we weren't paid I don't know how long it was," McKenna said.

At 3rd and Spring Garden more people were angered including social security worker Damarilis Mendez.

"I think it's unfair I have kids I'm a single mom having to work without pay. A big IOU isn't going to pay the bills or take care of my children," Mendez said. "Furlough congress. It's not fair we don't get paid while congress does."

Back at independence mall, tourists crowded in a corner just to get a glimpse of the liberty bell.

Their message to Washington:

"Congress stop playing games get back to work get our country back on track, " a woman yelled from the crowd.
