Suspect drives car off Detroit dealer's lot after switching key fob

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

King Auto Sales on Eight Mile Road is offering a $1,000 reward after one of its cars was stolen.

Employees say a suspect came to the lot and asked to test drive a gray 2012 Dodge Charger. He was given the key fob as the vehicle has a keyless, push-to-start ignition. As the suspect was returning the key fob, he pulled a "David Copperfield."

That's what one employee is calling it. They say the suspect swapped the key fob to the Charger with a fake one he already had on him. After the exchange the salesperson had no idea what had happened and the suspect walked off, now with the key fob to the Charger on him.

Employees say a second suspect returned later that day and drove the Charger off the lot, something you can see in the dealer's surveillance video. Employees have made a report with the Detroit Police Department and hope the reward they're offering will get the car returned to their lot soon.

A vehicle that runs on a push-to-start ignition can only do so if the key fob is in the near proximity, or the inside, of the vehicle.
