For those looking for ways to cut your power bill, you may not have to look far and it could pay off.
The experts say many Americans fail to get rid of out-dated energy-hungry appliances and one of the worst offenders is the refrigerator. DTE Energy is offering rebates of $40 dollars to recycle your old fridge.
And it's a good idea, The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers says 41-percent of Americans keep their old fridge running in the basement or garage. Most of those refrigerators are far less efficient than today's models. The EPA's website reports that you could "cut your energy bills by more than $80 over the lifetime of your fridge" by updating to a unit that's rated by the Energy Star program.
FOX 2 has partnered with DTE to highlight energy-saving ideas in Metro Detroit. The company says it will pick up your old working refrigerator and mail you a check. Other appliances such as freezers, room air conditioners and dehumidifiers may also qualify for a $20 rebate.
