Suspects sought in Athens credit card, phone theft

ATHENS, Ga. -

Athens-Clarke County police are searching for three men who stole a credit card and phone and then went on a shopping spree.

While football fans were focused on the Georgia versus South Carolina football game on Sept. 7, police say crooks struck on a downtown Athens sidewalk.

Sgt. David Norris of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department said that they believe the robbers were armed when they took a man's phone and debit cards.

The thieves wasted no time in using the victim's cards at a convenience store on West Broad Street, police said. Cameras captured the suspect's faces, according to detectives.

The suspects then continued the unauthorized shopping spree at a mall Foot Locker store.

While detectives are seeking help in finding the suspects, they are reminding people to be cautious when partying.

"If you do partake in drinking and having fun, or celebrations - make sure you don't overdo it to a point where you make yourself vulnerable to individuals that are looking to take advantage of you," Norris said.

A week after that incident, a Georgia student walking home from downtown was also robbed. Police are urging people to walk in groups.

Anyone with information on either robbery is asked to call Athens police at 706-613-3330.
