Paralyzed Woman Ends Up Beaten and Hospitalized At Convalescent Home

Posted: Updated:

42 year-old Shawna Walker is paralyzed and blind from her rheumatoid arthritis and she's been living at Windsor Palms Care Center for at least 10 years.

Her sister in law, Tina Peralta says "When you go see Shawna, even though she's in the condition she's in she's  happy so grateful that you're there."

But family members say they found her severely beaten and in at the hospital yesterday evening.  Doctors told them she suffered cranial fractures and bruised lungs.

Peralta says, "Her face was unrecognizable." And Walker's 24 year old son, David Hopkins says he "walked in there I looked at her I lost it I screamed at the top of my lungs."

Now, they want answers. A police report indicates she was in an altercation with another resident at Windsor Palms. The Lakewood sheriffs department says the investigation is ongoing and they are looking into the mental capacity of the two involved.

Walker's family members blame the facility for not doing more to protect their paralyzed loved one.

Walker's son says "It's not a safe, it's not clean it's not a place that should be open for business or whatever you want to call it. "

Peralta says,"Anyone who has loved ones there they just have to be aware of what's going on at Windsor, they don't even belong in business. "

We reached out to Windsor Palms Care Center but they never called back for comment.  According to one website, the center gets a below average rating.
