Suspect allegedly shoots at officers while barricaded in home for 8 hours

MESA, Ariz. -

A suspect allegedly shot at Mesa Police officers multiple times while they were in a stand off for hours overnight.

The home is gated and boarded up, but just hours earlier it was the scene of an eight hour standoff, where Mesa police say they were forced to dodge gunfire from the suspect inside.

"We heard some shots being fired, several of them," said Criss Kelley, a neighbor.

Residents were rattled Saturday to hear their longtime neighbor, 54-year-old Dwayne Clayton, is the suspect.

Police went to the home after Clayton's estranged wife called dispatch reporting her husband told her "someone is going to die."

Police were in the process of checking on Clayton before they say he shot at officers several times.

"Bang bang bang bang...and that's the way they left it," said Helmut Duschek, a neighbor.

As bullets flew across the street, neighbors were told to leave homes and find cover in back alley.

They came and knocked on our window and said you have to evacuate alley," said Kelley.

The SWAT team surrounded the home and used an armored truck to break in.

"Then we heard all the gas bombs going off, lot of banging, saw trucks ramming the house," said Brody Smelter, a neighbor.

Police say A k-9 then got a hold of the Clayton before Officers arrested him.

Police say the suspect suffered a dog bite wound, but no other injuries.

No officer was shot or seriously hurt.

In the entire standoff, police say they didn't fire back.

"It's just hard to believe this could happen so close," said Smelter.
