Making your baby's crib a safe, warm place to sleep

Every year in Michigan nearly 150 babies die as a result of unsafe sleep environments. Now that the weather is getting colder Renee Zarr, with Kohl's Injury Prevention Program at the DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan, shares important information on how to keep your baby warm and safe.

Get rid of:

  • Bumper pads
  • Pillows
  • Stuffed animals
  • Bottles
  • Any lose bedding or blankets

There should be no lose articles in the crib.

Zarr recommends a wearable blanket for your baby. She says the article of clothing is a safe alternative to a normal blanket, and will keep the baby warm without the risk of it pulling up and covering the baby's nose or mouth.

Zarr says pacifiers are OK to have as long as it has no attached cord.

A fitted sheet on the mattress is OK, also, as long as it is nicely fitted.

And, finally, Zarr warns, "Babies should never co-sleep with anybody. No adult, no children, no other infants. It is okay to let your baby sleep in your room with you, but don't let them sleep in your bed with you."
