NY attorney general seeks Airbnb data

Posted: Updated:

A quick search of Airbnb reveals thousands of listings for short-term rentals across New York City. The problem is that some of the listings may violate an illegal hotel law that's been on the state's books since 2010.

Now state officials are starting to crack down. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office has subpoenaed data about the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who use Airbnb.

The probe will reportedly target property managers who rent out multiple units, or people who rent their places for most of the year, not necessarily casual Airbnb users.

State Sen. Liz Kruger authored the 2010 illegal hotel law and she supports the investigation.

"If you are resident of New York who is in fact renting out large numbers of units or permanently renting out units, that is illegal so you may be caught up in this and told it's illegal," she said.

In an email to its users, the head of Airbnb said the company will vigorously fight the attorney general's subpoena, but he did say the company would work with authorities to root our people who abuse the rules.
