GILBERT, Ariz. -

A man has pleaded not guilty after being arrested in a string of robberies in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Gilbert police say 30-year-old Luke Broeker was taken into custody in September at a Mesa motel. His wife, 27-year-old Shannon Broeker, was also arrested.

The Broekers were accused of working as a team to rob east valley businesses.

Back on Oct. 1st, Shannon told FOX 10 they felt like they had no other choice and had to feed their four kids.  She says he lost his job and they were desperate to feed and shelter their four young boys.

Authorities said the couple robbed about 10 stores in the east valley, including Fry's, Walgreens and 7-Eleven.

According to police, Luke Broeker would stand in line as if he were a customer and then when he would get to the cashier he would grab money out of the register.

A Maricopa County Superior Court spokeswoman says Broeker entered his plea Wednesday.
