Letter teaches students lesson about taxation

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -

Educators in Douglas County used a letter to teach students a lesson about taxation without representation.

On Tuesday, students at Mason Creek Middle School were given a letter listing new policies amidst a budget crunch.

Among the new fees: students were told they'd have to pay 10 cents for each minute they were late to class, a 20 cent fee for each lost assignment, $1 to sharpen pencils and a $10 yearly fee for use of desk.

The school's vice-principal, Angela Richardson, said it was all about taking a step back to teach the students a lesson.

"It's about learning about exactly how the colonists felt under England's rule of unfair taxation without representation," Richardson said.

For the entire school day, the students thought the new fees were real.

Some students gathered together to protest the desk fee.

"Everybody got out of their seats and sat on the floor," said one student.

The students' reaction was exactly what the school had hoped for.

"They talked about how unfair things were, that they were going to do something about this, which is what we wanted," said Richardson.

School officials said that they have done similar letter lessons in the past.
