Traffic around Brookhaven school worries parents

Posted: Updated:
BROOKHAVEN, Ga. -

Parents are concerned about traffic near a Brookhaven school.

Residents say that traffic around Ashford Park Elementary is perilous during morning when students are dropped off.

"I think for the parents and students who walk every day, that  it could be potentially be dangerous," said Caryn Briggs, a parent of a student at the school.

Parent leaders say the school PTA has run out of money to pay an off-duty police officer $40 an hour to direct traffic.

Parent Katherine Coy thinks Brookhaven Police should provide an officer to address the problem.

"I don't think anybody's really taking responsibility for it, and I want to see that happen. I want to see the Brookhaven Police Department protect its citizens, and especially its youngest citizens," Coy said.

Police officials said they don't have enough staff to send an on-duty officer to one school. A police spokesman said they have 12 schools within its boundaries.

"The Brookhaven Police Department conducts regular patrols around those schools to help ensure the safety of the children and staff. We also continue to provide off duty officers to work individual schools when requested by the administrators," said Lt. Brandon Gurley of the Brookhaven Police Department.

Concerned parents acknowledge that the source of the trouble is largely coming from other parents who are in a rush to drop off their kids. Regardless of the source parents said that police are needed to address it.

"I think that it is probably the most dangerous situation that most of those children will face on a daily basis is being in front of the school," Coy said.
