Glee's Cory Monteith: Understanding Heroin Addiction

Posted: Updated:

Despite entertaining millions on the small screen, beloved actor, 31 year old Cory Monteith may have been suffering through an internal struggle.

Richard Taite is the founder of Cliffside Malibu rehab center and a former addict himself, "my guess is something was causing him enough pain where he had to self medicate it."

He says he's seeing more and more addictions to prescription drugs and heroin at his center, "every 19 minutes someone dies of an overdose in this country, it's a serious problem."

Experts say the first thing to treat the problem, is recognizing it.

Dr. Damon Raskin says, "addiction happens when someone relies on something so much it takes over their lives they're constantly looking for when their next fix is, it interferes with their work, their social life, it takes over everything. That's when you know you have an addiction."

For monteith, the coronor's report noted periodic stints in rehab, but he resorted back to his addiction which lead to his death.

Doctors say detoxing is only the chemical way to kick an addiction, but the psychological reversal can be much more important.

"The relapse rate can be high because they're not getting to the root of the problem. they're not getting into therapy to go ahead and lead a stressful life without resorting back to the drug and alcohol problem," says Dr. Raskin.

And in monteith's case, his combination of very public success and a private addiction, may have also been a deadly combination.
"Very high functioning addicts are the biggest problem, there's a lot of people around them saying yes, that we often find these addicts are functioning but they have a big problem," says Dr. Raskin.
