Off-duty officer pulls elderly woman from burning home

LOGANVILLE, Ga. -

An off-duty Rockdale County sheriff's deputy is being hailed for his heroic actions after rescuing a woman from a burning building after his shift ended.

Deputy Tim Kutsch saw flames coming from Choice Care Senior Living Facility on Thursday night and didn't hesitate to help an unresponsive elderly woman.

"It was just covered in smoke. I mean, smoke was just rolling out of the entire house," Kutsch said. "I'm assuming that's why she was passed out because of the smoke."

The house is located on Highway 20 in Walton County. Kutsch says he didn't think twice about entering the burning building even though he was on his way home to his wife and three children.

"Our job is to go home every night, yes. But I just have the mindset, you know, if you need help, I'm going to help you, you know, we'll worry about the consequences later," Kutsch said.

The senior living facility was nearly destroyed by the flames. It's one of the reasons Sheriff Eric Levett was proud to give a lifesaving commendation award To Deputy Kutsch.

"It is such an honor for him to take the time out to think about nobody else but the community – no matter where he was at -- even though he was outside the county," Levett said.

Kutsch says he was just fulfilling his duty as a Rockdale County sheriff's deputy.

"I just thought I was doing my job, you know. I've always been the kind of person to help people or try to help people," Kutsch said. "I really didn't expect this. They needed help. So, I tried to help them."

Kutsch came to work the very next day even though he was treated at the hospital for a cut to his arm. His dedication to the job is one of the reasons the sheriff' decided to surprise him with the lifesaving commendation on Friday.
