Woman scammed out of $100 in fraudulent Class Action Lawsuit

Posted: Updated:

A Detroit woman was scammed out of a hundred dollars after she believed she was to be awarded money from a Class Action Lawsuit.

Florina Turner received a phone call informing her she was to receive compensation from a Class Action Lawsuit involving birth control. She was told she was going to be awarded $7,234. Turner was then instructed to purchase a green dot MoneyPak card and put $100 on it.

Then the caller asked for the green dot account number so the funds could be loaded onto the account. Turner gave the account number, and says her hundred dollars vanished almost instantly.

Turner said she asked them what happened to her money. She says they told her the hundred dollars was for security purposes and she needed to pay $150 more for lawyer fees. Turner did not do that, and the scammers keep calling.

"They called me back again, telling me they were from the Bank of America, and if I go get another [green dot card], put $50 on there, and my money would be on within thirty minutes," Turner tells Fox 2's Ron Savage. "I'm out $100, and I have six kids, and I don't have time to be giving my money away."

Turner at one point asked the caller for an address, and they told her they were located in Atlanta, GA. It is possible, though, the callers could be worldwide and using an Internet phone connection.

If you receive any calls like this contact police.
