Barricade Situation Involving Temple Student Ends In North Philly

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A barricade situation involving a Temple University student has ended.

Police took the man into custody around 2 a.m.

The 26-year-old had barricaded himself in a house on the 1800 block of Willington Street for almost 20 hours.

The area was blocked off, and people nearby were just being allowed back into their homes when "Good Day Philadelphia" went on the air at 4:25 a.m.

Police tell us they safely negotiated with the man who was holed up in the home's basement.

One witness says he saw the man with a gun "pointing out the window.

"It's crazy man," the witness said. "I just was taking my little niece and nephew to the playground, and for them 7- and 6-years-old to have to witness something like this, it's just unbelievable in our community."

Investigators say the man has a history of mental health issues and may have barricaded himself in the house because of relationship troubles.

FOX 29's Stephanie Esposito was live Monday morning in North Philadelphia as neighbors were returning to their homes.
