Poll: Gov. Deal faces tougher fight than expected in re-election bid

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A new InsiderAdvantage poll suggests that Gov. Nathan Deal may not have an easy time winning re-election next year.

Deal won his party's nomination in 2010 after a bruising run-off battle with former Secretary of State Karen Handle.

If he is challenged again from within his own party, Democrats could see an opening to mount a challenge.

Deal is still comfortably ahead of other Republicans: The poll shows the governor with 51 percent support, Dalton Mayor David Pennington with 10 percent, Georgia School Superintendent John Barge at 8 percent and 31 percent undecided.

Matt Towery of InsiderAdvantage said it's still too early to see how the numbers will change as Gov. Deal steps up his media presence and starts putting ads of his own on the air.
