The Wolf Connection: Wildlife Used As Therapy Dogs

Posted: Updated:

To some people having a wolf or wolf-dog hybrid as a pet is really cool. In California, without a wild animal license, it's really illegal. When one of these wolf-dogs become abandoned state law says they are to be confiscated and euthanized. In some cases they are bred legally in states where they are allowed like Texas. In other cases they are bred underground and illegally.

Teo and Renee Alfero own a wolf/wolf-dog rescue in Acton. They have some 15 outdoor kennels with 29 of these animals.

Wolf Connection claims to be the only non-profit in the nation that rescues these sort of animals and trains them as therapy animals for at-risk teens, veterans with post traumatic stress disorder and persons in substance abuse programs, but this rescue is in need of rescue.

The Alferos say they're being asked to leave the Acton ranch by LA County Officials because of overcrowding and other concerns.

The problematic things about wolves and wolf-dogs is that - per state law - they can not be adopted-out as pets. And, you can't really introduce them into the wild because they never learned how to hunt and are too used to humans. So, the Alferos say if this rescue is lost that could spell doom for the 29 outcasts at Wolf Connection.

I met the folks from Gunnar Optiks at CES this year and they had something new to show me. The Intercepts. I have a big head, these are big frames, it was kismet but do they work as good as they look? We'll see.
