Bus Stopped Picking Up Kids After Confrontation With Driver

Posted: Updated:

A bus driver's unhealthy habit has one Milwaukee mother up in arms. And now, she says that her children are the ones paying the price. However, the bus company says they have their reasons for avoiding her home.

Mom says that her child loves his school, but the bus hasn't been showing up to take him there. And it's because of a fight on the bus, but not between kids.

Dante-Vion Rankin is the boy. His mom Marletha says that when her kids missed the bus last Thursday, she jumped in the car and caught up with the driver.

After catching up to the bus, she says she knocked on the bus door and saw smoke come pouring out—the bus driver had been smoking on the bus.

"As soon as I knocked on the door, when he opened up the door, the smoke came out. My first words are, ‘are you smoking?'" Rankin recalled.

Marletha confronted him and he told her he smoked before any kids got on the bus.

"Don't you know secondhand smoke kills?" she argued back.

According to the bus company, Marletha and her fiance both threatened the driver after nasty words were exchanged.

Both the school and the bus company decided not to stop at the Rankin's address until the family agrees to sit down with them.

The Rankin's says that stopping transportation is not just hurting her family but also four other children who live at the same address or nearby. In total, six children have been absent from the school since last Thursday.

The bus company says the driver has been reprimanded for smelling like smoke, but they will not just fire him like the Rankin's demanded. The Marletha says that she will be enrolling her children in public schools.
