DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: Ramsey County cracks down with warrant sweep

Posted: Updated:

October is Family Violence Awareness Month, and law enforcement officials across the country -- including those in the Twin Cities -- are rounding up the most dangerous offenders wanted for domestic violence.

Authorities in Ramsey County are among those cracking down as part of the nationwide sweep that intends to send a message to the worst of the worst.

Fox 9 News got to ride along with the officers, 50 of whom were up before the sun to track down Ramsey County's most wanted. Tom Dahedl spends most of his days searching for people who have warrants out for their arrest, but on Wednesday, he had plenty of help.

"Today, we got probation with us," he explained. "That's a big intelligence piece for us."

Dahedl and a handful of other officers went door-to-door, often with guns drawn, to help find 120 men and women who have been violent toward family members. The team spent hours repeating the same scenario over and over, but to no avail.

"It's hit and miss," he conceded. "This particular type of offense, these guys are very transitional. They know, whatever they did, the cops are going to be coming.

Yet, Dahedl says even some of the misses are still successes.

"They don't want the cops coming there anymore, so they are getting on the offenders to turn themselves in," he said. "A lot of the attempts lead to arrests."

In all, the 6 teams in Ramsey County served 92 warrants and made 12 arrests in the 7th year they participated in the sweep. Nationwide, 750 arrests were made.

Yet, no matter how many suspects are taken into custody, working together to address the problem is its own reward.

"A lot of these offenders are hiding," Dahedl acknowledged. "We want to get them apprehended for the safekeeping of their victims."
