Discover the magic: New Chicago exhibit honors legacy of Walt Disney

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A new exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry pays tribute to the work of Walt Disney. The exhibit includes many items you have never seen before, and runs through May 2014.

Walt Disney, his life, his work and his legacy are all represented at "Treasures of the Walt Disney Archive."

There are photos of his christening, shortly after he was born – in Chicago – in 1901, of his parents in 1913, the home he lived in as a child at 1249 Tripp Avenue. But perhaps the centerpiece of the exhibit is the actual desk where Walt sat for more than 30 years in Burbank, California, displayed exactly as it was left when Walt died in 1966.

"It's a sneak peek inside Walt's life and that's part of what our exhibit is about," an organizer said. "Understanding what inspired Walt Disney and how he's inspired generations of other people."

The exhibit features personal letters sent from President Roosevelt, from the great actor Cecil B. DeMille, President Eisenhower and the great Jack Benny, who said 1964's "Mary Poppins" starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke was the greatest picture he's ever seen.

The exact carpet bag Mary Poppins used during the filming of the movie is also on display, as well as what Glenn Close wore as Cruella DeVille in the most recent take on "101 Dalmations." The exhibit also features the outfit Johnny Depp wore as Captain Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" and the costume actor Guy Williams wore in "Zorro," which debuted back in 1957.

If going back in time isn't your thing, you can learn to draw in the Animation Academy. Anyone who visits can learn how to make Mickey Mouse come alive!

"Treasures of the Walt Disney Archive" is an experience that is sure to please visitors of all ages. Come on down to the Museum of Science and Industry to check it out!
