Movie Critic Matt Atchity: One The Critics Are Going Bananas For

Posted: Updated:

A remake, a reunion, and a likely Oscar contender hit theaters this weekend. Matt Atchity says if you're looking for quality this weekend, critics are highly recommending "12 Years a Slave".

"A lot of the critics are mentioning this and saying that this will probably be as influential towards the culture as "Roots"...there's a lot of pundits who are saying that this is probably an early favorite for best picture."

Another new release that will probably not be an Oscar candidate is "Escape Plan". The action flick reunites 80's action stars Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger...but critics say it lacks punch.

"This is a movie I think should have happened 30 years ago...critics say where this one goes wrong is it feels like these guys kinda got jammed into a movie that wasn't written for them. They do get a lot of screen time together and they both have a great screen presence...but it doesn't ultimately add up."

A horror classic gets remade with "Carrie"...does it work?

"The version in the 70's that was directed by Brian de Palma was a fantastic film. The critics say this one...doesn't bring enough new to the table to really make it worthwhile. You've got good performances...but it doesn't quite hold up compared to the original "

Atchity is the editor in chief for the pop-culture website "Rotten Tomatoes." He also hosts a new show on Sirius XM called "Rotten Tomatoes Radio."

The weekly one hour call in show airs Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

‘Rotten Tomatoes TV Zone' is up now on the Rotten Tomatoes website.
