‘What's Your Excuse' mom defends photo

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A workout loving mother of three from Los Angeles is still defending herself against social media users.

She took a picture of herself with her young sons, posted it with a caption that reads, "What's your excuse?"

Maria Kang, 32, says she doesn't have any regrets because she puts herself on the list of priorities everyday.

She works out, looks good, and she had hoped the picture and post would be inspiration for other working moms.

Not so.

There are a lot of haters out there on this one but Maria Kang says isn't listening.

"I was just showing mothers that if I can do it, so can you. Of course I'm not saying that you need to necessarily look like me or have the abs that I have but I'm saying you should be healthy and put yourself as a priority," Kang said.

Kang says who knew those three words, "What's your excuse," would set working mothers around the world off.

"It's a very thought-provoking question and that's a pretty profound image so I can understand where people are coming from. I mean they see the caption "What's your excuse" and they really absorbed it and took it however they wanted to," Kang said.

Kang first posted the photo wearing a sports bar and boy shorts with her three sons last year. Eight months after having her youngest child. Kang re-posted it after she noticed some moms going postal on Facebook and Twitter.

"Women should really support each other. We should really celebrate healthy moms, healthy family. I think that we are struggling a lot as a nation with our obesity and with being overweight and also with being a mother. It's not easy. I understand because I'm a working mom and it's really hard to keep fitness and even myself as a priority so I understand the guilt and the frustration and maybe the challenges that women are facing and maybe my picture kinda made them upset because they were maybe stressed or depressed at the time and felt like I wasn't being very fair," Kang said.

Her photo got 20,000 comments, most of them were positive and complimentary. Others Kang says were offensive, angry and accused the woman who works out an hour six days a week, of "fat-shaming."

"I'm not going to apologize for who I am. I work really hard. I mean there's something to be said for dedicated to your family and personal health," Kang said.

Kang works for a non-profit workout center in California and her husband doesn't work and stays home watching the three kids while she works and gets her workout on.
