Neighborhood Comes Together After Recent Robberies

Posted: Updated:

A recent wave of robberies has prompted people in one Philadelphia neighborhood to come together to protect each other.

Neighbors say it's a big thing in Philadelphia's Mount Airy section that's especially true after five recent robberies.

Greg Williams is looking at more e-mails on a community list after meeting with several dozen neighbors Sunday to further a town watch plan designed to protect east Mount Airy residents from crime.

"Couple of people who were victims of the crime were there and kind of talked about their experience," Williams said.

The neighborhood is reeling from a recent wave of robberies. Police arrested Gary Corbett and allege he was targeting elderly women coming home from this train station late at night.

"I think women who are victims; I think everybody thinks we can do something. We may not be able to eliminate it but we can do something," Williams said.

"I think it was really wonderful because people just started saying "well I'll take care of that, I'll do this...I'll organize a group of people willing to be escorts (as people) call and come home late on the train and need a ride" Williams said.

Lynn Mather is the neighborhood's most recent crime victim. She was jumped Wednesday night and says her backpack was stolen.

She told FOX29 exclusively on Friday that neighbors ran to her after hearing her screams.

"He heard me from the second floor then others came from there and over there, across the street, even a few houses down," Mather said.

Now those neighbors say they will be proactive by watching their streets and communicating everything they see.

"Folks also decided that we'd kind of maintain the block by block structure…but then be kind of like an umbrella group, the Mount Airy Train Station group…that would kind of bring all those groups together."

Police say they welcome the town watch efforts and they're also reaching out to residents via e-mail when suspicious activity is reported.
