Detroit bomb suspect can be forced to take meds

DETROIT (AP) -

A mentally ill Upper Peninsula man charged with placing a bomb outside a Detroit federal building can be forced to take medicine against his will.

A federal appeals court on Tuesday ruled in the favor of the government. The court says it's not an easy decision but the government has a right to use medicine to bring Gary Mikulich to justice.

Mikulich is charged with leaving a tool bag with explosive components outside the McNamara Federal Building in 2011. He's declined to take medicine and doesn't want it forced on him.

The government wants the 45-year-old Mikulich treated so he can be found competent to stand trial.

The explosive sat for three weeks inside the McNamara building before it was scanned and subsequently destroyed by a bomb squad.
