Father says 7-year-old son hurt by classmate at school

Posted: Updated:
LITHONIA, Ga. -

A father says his second-grade son suffered several injuries in a violent run-in with a classmate at their Lithonia school last Friday.

Cedric Austin said his 7-year-old son has a fractured finger, lost two fingernails and has other injuries on both hands after another child smashed his hands in the door of a bathroom stall at Panola Way Elementary School.

"He just kept smashing my fingers," said Cedric Austin Jr. "Last time we saw blood dripping out, he just smashed them one more time and ran out."

The boy's father is upset because he believes, given the severity of his son's injuries, school administrators should have sought emergency medical care for his son instead of calling him to pick up the child.

Austin says his son's hands were already bandaged when he picked him up at school after the incident and didn't know how badly Cedric was hurt until doctors at DeKalb Medical examined him. He questioned school policy.

Austin said he met with school administrators on Tuesday and spelled out his concerns. He demanded the child who hurt his son be punished. He said he was simply told they are looking into the incident.

"I just want something done about it," Austin said.

A spokesperson with DeKalb County Schools told FOX 5's Deidra Dukes that he was unaware of the incident and is looking into it.
