Shakopee police investigate shooting at home on Prairie Street S - Fox 2 News Headlines

Man killed in shooting at Shakopee home

Posted: Updated:

Shakopee police are investigating a deadly shooting at a home on Tuesday night, but neighbors say they have been told they are not in any danger.

Fox 9 confirmed with Shakopee police that one man was killed in the shooting. His identity has not been released.

Officers received report of an armed robbery at a home in the 800 block of Prairie Street South at about 7 p.m., and they remained on scene into the early morning hours. Officers found an adult man inside the home who had suffered apparent gunshot wounds and died at the scene.

Police said the incident does not pose a threat to the public, though residents told Fox 9 News police asked them to stay inside their homes on Tuesday night.

Police confirmed a man, a woman and two dogs live in the home, and that they have only lived there for about a year.

Neighbors told Fox 9 News a man who lives in the home is a member of the Minnesota National Guard.

"So close to home, it's scary," Dean Joersz said. "I mean, it's very scary. You know, I always thought Shakopee is a pretty safe area, and this neighborhood's always been fairly safe -- but I don't know. It's scary. Real scary."

No other details were released, but Shakpoee Police Chief Jeff Tate issued the following statement on Friday to address repeated questions from the community about the fatal shooting:

Over the past few days, our agency has received many questions in regards to the homicide on Tuesday. The Shakopee Police Department is committed to the safety of the community and would never hesitate to warn citizens if we thought they were in danger. Many of your questions will come to light in the future but we ask for your trust when we say that there is no immediate danger to the general public. There are details in this investigation which support our initial statement that we believe this was not random act. As you may imagine, it is highly inappropriate to release detailed information surrounding an active investigation. When releasing information about a case, the Department considers public safety, Minnesota state law and the risk of compromising an investigation and successful prosecution. We appreciate your support. Rest assured, we are doing all we can to conclude this very complex investigation.

Thank you,

Shakopee Police Chief Jeff Tate
