It's another reason to rethink your sugar-filled drink and keep your blood sugar levels under control. A new German study finds people with lower blood sugar levels may be less likely to have memory problems.

"In these individuals who were not diabetic, they were not overweight and they were not drinking more than three drinks a day, that the lower their sugar was the better they did on the memory tests," Dr. Ronan Factora explains. He is a geriatrician at Cleveland Clinic.

German researchers  studied 141 people whose average age was 63. They did not have diabetes or prediabetes, and none had memory or thinking problems when the study began. Results show people with lower blood sugar levels were more likely to have better scores on memory tests.

Researchers say this suggests that even for people within normal range of blood sugar, lowering their blood sugars could be a promising strategy for preserving memory.

"Controlling your sugars, keeping them low through controlling your diet and through a performance of exercises seems to provide benefits that you can measure now and, you know, may provide benefits down the line," Ronan says.

Controlling your blood sugar levels involves eating vegetables, beans and food with fiber, and also drinking water. Limit starchy foods like pasta and sweets.
