Settlement reached in Georgia fish kill

SPRINGFIELD, Ga. (AP) - Effingham County has reached an out-of-court settlement with King America Finishing Inc. for undisclosed damages linked to a massive fish kill in the Ogeechee River.

County Attorney Eric Gotwalt told the Savannah Morning News (http://bit.ly/H2ZtI3) the amount of the settlement will be disclosed under state open records laws after all parties have signed it.

The county commission voted to accept the settlement during a meeting on Tuesday.

An estimated 39,000 fish died in 2011 near a King America Finishing textile outfall pipe that was linked to a fire retardant processing line discharging into the river without a permit. Investigators said pollution was likely among several factors that killed the fish.

Commission Chairman Wendall Kessler says it's unclear how much money the county will get because legal fees must be deducted.
