DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

A man has been wounded during a gunfight with a carjacking suspect who, moments earlier, had robbed a woman of her SUV at a Detroit gas station on East Jefferson.

"I'm still trying to make sense of it myself. I think I'm just a little bit shocked," says Sharlonda Buckman. She is the CEO of a Detroit nonprofit, Detroit Parent Network. "At the time, I came out and jumped in my car. Before I could close the door a guy was standing there with a gun. He said, 'Get out.'"

A fellow customer saw what was happening.

"He grabbed her and he was trying to tussle with her, he was trying to get her out," Michael Turner tells Fox 2's Alexis Wiley. He and another customer went over to the situation and tried to help. Turner says the suspect aimed the gun at him and fired a shot, then got into the SUV and drove away.

Two other witnesses, identified as Jason McQuire and Kelvin Kirkland drove after the SUV, which took off towards the Detroit River and drove through the entrance gate of Edison Marina. The carjacking suspect exited the SUV just as it began to slide into the canal.

The carjacker then got into a gunfight with Kirkland, who was injured. The carjacker may have been injured as well, but he was still able to get into Kirkland's Ford Focus and take off driving, once again.

Police say the witness has a concealed pistol license and was shot in the arm.

Kirkland is in good condition and is expected to recover. Police, also, have since recovered Buckman's SUV from the water.

"We tell our citizens it's better to be in the eyes and ears position, than it is to actually chase. But at the same time, I mean, I can't fault the guy for actually wanting to protect his neighborhood and his fellow citizens," says Sgt. Michael Woody of the Detroit Police Department.

"There are no longer neighborhoods where we're neighbors. So, instead of being in a neighborhood, you're neighborly. You do what you would want them [to do] for your family," McQuire says.

Buckman is grateful. "They don't know me from atom, but put their lives on the line and distracted him long enough so that I could get to safe harbor."

The description of the carjacker is minimal at this time. Witnesses say he is a black man, possibly five feet nine inches tall and has a slender build.

He was last seen driving away in Kirkland's 2009 blue Ford Focus. The license plate is CDU 0284.

If you see the suspect or the vehicle, or know anything else about this incident, contact Detroit Police.
