NYU Langone and Bellevue still recovering from Superstorm Sandy

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Roxanne Cordero still gets shaken when she thinks about how Superstorm Sandy impacted her family's life. Her son, Jeremiah, was just 2 weeks old and had just undergone open-heart surgery.

Sandy hit and NYU Langone hospital lost power. Backup generators died, and the hospital was forced to evacuate hundreds of patients including Jeremiah. He was transferred to Columbia Medical Center where he recovered.

Now a year later, he just celebrated his first birthday.

It has been a long road for NYU Langone and Bellevue Hospital, which also had to evacuate after Sandy hit.

NYU gave reporters a tour of its new emergency room that had to be rebuilt since Sandy.

Bellevue's repairs included moving its electrical power vault from the basement to the first floor.

However, the president of city hospitals is urging FEMA to provide money so the hospital can make more changes to prevent possible damage from future storms.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
