Human trafficking, sex slavery a bigger problem in Detroit than you might think

Theresa Flores shares her story of survival after she was kidnapped and trafficked as a teenager, and how she and a state senator are now fighting to make Michigan law the toughest against human trafficking to keep other children safe.

"It's much more lucrative than the drug trade," explains Michigan State Senator Judy Emmons. "You buy an individual once, or you kidnap an individual, and you can sell that person over and over and over."

Young girls between the ages of 12 and 15 are typically targeted. Flores says it is happening in every zip code, and you can find traces of it online on certain websites.

"Every survivor that I have spoken to - across the country - has told me they have come through Detroit at one point or the other," Flores says.

Emmons believes the state could be ranked as high as fourteenth in the nation for human trafficking, and possibly even higher than that.
