Lakeview in recovery after Wrigleyville fire

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

From the roof of the El Jardin Restaurant across the street is a view of devastation Friday night's fire left behind in the tight-knit Lakeview neighborhood.

"The people walking back and forth and the buildings getting loss and the people that work there, we knew them personally and it's a very sad thing," said Jane Alvarez, El Jardin Restaurant Owner.

The daylight hours exposed the decades destroyed in a matter of moments.

"Roadhouse and Thai Classic have been there for such a long time and we've gotten to know them and become friends," said Alvarez.

Three family businesses demolished in the name of public safety while investigators still try to determine what caused the fire.

Bystanders and business owners watched in awe.

"It's the second day after the fire so it really affects our business. We had to be closed and tonight all the streets are blocked and we can't get customers, just the only ones who walk in and at this point it really affects our business right now... we don't know how long it's going to take them to finish," said Natalia Golamkova, who works at Blokes and Birds.

Hours were spent fighting the fire Friday night and putting out hot spots during the early morning hours while witnesses watched home video in disbelief.

"It was really scary for me when I was on my way to work. Last night I had some thoughts about it that it could have happened to our restaurant, it is really scary," said Natalie Golamkova.
