Happenings at Halas: Cutler walks field, plays catch

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Jay Cutler did what he could during practice Monday. He caught the ball, walked the field, stretched his torn groin. No indication he's coming back sooner than the original four week timeline, but encouraging none the less for the Chicago Bears as they start Packers week.

"We really have to play together now more than ever," Bears coach Marc Trestman said. "We have to know our assignments and do our job. That's the biggest thing we can take coming out of the bye."

With their starting quarterback and best linebacker out, the Bears have no choice but to spread the leadership around - on both sides of the ball. Offensively that obviously falls on Josh McCown.

"He executed very well today. We ran 20-30 plays, ball wasn't on the ground. It went smoothly with him in there," Trestman said.

McCown's QB rating near 120 in Washington gives the Bears confidence he can keep the NFL's 5th highest scoring team in that category.

But he took off on some pretty risky runs, and took some pretty hard hits. So re-signing Jordan Palmer was a smart move. The veteran back up returned Monday and was praised for what he was able to retain of the playbook from his preseason experience.

Palmer told me he is encouraged that they called him back, not that he was picked out of a try out. He's never been on a team this talented, he's going to do everything he can to be ready if called upon. Don't we all hope that doesn't happen. Sorry, Jordan...it's true.

Defensively, the team hasn't decided who will call the plays - James Anderson or rookie Jon Bostic. But they will give rookie Kaseem Greene a long look at filling in on the weak side during practice this week. Greene and Bostic dazzled a bit during the preseason but we all know how different that is from a Monday night in Green Bay.

"If I am the starter, I can't try to be Lance. I'm not him. I learned a lot from him, but I just have to go out and try to make plays. If I try to do more than that, I'll hurt the defense and the whole team," said Greene.

Greene sounds ready for the challenge, but added he values the reps this week in practice and that he can still talk to Briggs and ask questions as he prepares for Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.

Team picture day happened Monday afternoon. Not sure why they wait until October but new linebacker Larry Grant and Palmer likely the most pleased, as they get to be a part of it.

It was kind of appropriate though as the Bears focus on coming together as a team, and developing a winning game plan, not just for Green Bay but for the final nine games.
