Orr returns to testify, scolded by judges for long answers

DETROIT (WJBK) - Lawyers in court like to ask yes-or-no questions. But they don't always like to answer just yes or no.

The judge overseeing Detroit's bankruptcy trial scolded city emergency manger Kevyn Orr for his long elaboration in response to yes-or-no questions.

Before a lunch break Tuesday, Judge Steven Rhodes said he's been "ineffective" in getting Orr to limit his answers. Orr apologized.

The judge told Orr he would accept the apology if Orr accepts his advice. Orr is a lawyer and is a key witness in a trial to determine if Detroit will be allowed to restructure $18 billion in debts in bankruptcy court.

Also a topic in court today was a nickname for Detroit that can be seen in an email circulated to Kevyn Orr from Jones Day lawyers, before Orr became the city's emergency manager. The title of the email referred to Detroit as "Debtwa," a play on words for the city's pronunciation.

The nickname didn't sit well with lawyers for AFSCME. "It's insulting. First, we have to endure the loss of our right to vote, then we're called 'dumb, lazy, happy and rich,' then you see lawyers - Jones Day lawyers, who by the way are receiving tens of millions of dollars in taxpayer money, referring to Detroit as D-E-B-T-W-A - Debt-wa. It's insulting; as a Detroiter I'm insulted," Richard Mack tells Fox 2's Charlie Langton. He is a lawyer for AFSCME.
 
Orr is due back on the witness stand next Monday, when the trial resumes.
