Dr. Lori Shorr On Good Day

PHILADELPHIA -

From the loss of 3,000 teachers, counselors, principals and aides to the anxiety over leveling, it hasn't exactly been a smooth start for the School District of Philadelphia.

The announcement last week of $45 million dollars in state funding for the district is bringing back 400 workers, but there is still a long way to go to reducing the deficit.

Chief Education Officer Dr. Lori Shorr talked to Mike and Sheinelle about where Philadelphia schools stand now and a new initiative to keep students in school.

"The whole idea of leveling is to make sure you're at the contractual limit, which is 30 kids to a teacher, K to 3rd, and then 33 per classroom," Dr. Shorr describes.

The new initiative is called Project U-Turn, and it focuses on getting kids in school and eventually graduating.

Dr. Shorr says that if a kid misses school more than twice a month, it can indicate problems at home that need support. She explains to Good Day that kids need to realize that school is important and valuable, and parents need to do everything to make sure their child is actually attending classes.
