ASU student attacked case: Final police report released

Posted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. -

There's new information about a violent beating caught on camera -- an Arizona State University student forced into an elevator and beaten by three other students.  Now the Tempe police have released their final report detailing what happened that night.

Police say the student who was beaten had a blood alcohol level that was almost four times the legal limit.  He told police he can't remember anything about the fight or what led up to it.

We now know just how badly Brady Roland was beaten inside of an elevator at an off-campus apartment near ASU.  The college sophomore had eight broken bones in his face and had to have reconstructive surgery.

911 caller: "I just found a kid who I think somebody beat him up.. he is bleeding from his mouth."

Students called 911 and Roland was rushed to a hospital.  Authorities say Roland refused to talk to police at first, but did say he had six or seven cans of beer and five or six shots of vodka that night.

911 caller: "I don't know who this kid is.. I don't know what happened to him."

ASU students Kiernan Bates, Harsimrandee Bhatti and Joshua James were all arrested -- accused of being involved in some way in the attack. According to the police report, Bates told police Roland walked into his apartment drunk and refused to leave thinking it was his own. Bates claims he and his buddies tried to help Roland to the elevator and that's when they say Roland got violent.

Kiernan's father, Ken Bates, e-mailed a statement to us:

"We find it interesting that the police filed charges against our son when the witnesses interviewed have confirmed that Brady Roland entered Kiernan's apartment illegally, was intoxicated and the only witness in the elevator confirmed that Brady Roland struck Kiernan twice and tried to strangle him before Kiernan was able to defend himself."

The Bates family also claims Brady Roland has been in trouble before.

We are still looking into court records and we'll let you know what we find out.
